Overview
Since 1985, during each academic year the Cornell Mathematics Department has offered a series of four full-day workshops for mathematics teachers. Anyone interested in issues related to the teaching and learning of mathematics is welcome to attend (e.g., teachers, prospective teachers, mathematics graduate and undergraduate students, and mathematicians). During workshop sessions participants examine principles underlying the content of the school mathematics curriculum, including connections with the history of mathematics, technology, and mathematics education research. Participation at one workshop is not prerequisite to attending another.
MATH 4980 & MATH 5080 are courses that co-meet. MATH 4980 is the course number for Cornell undergraduates who enroll in the course, and MATH 5080 is the course number for graduate students (including teachers).
Registration, Credit, and Costs
There are three options for receiving credit for MATH 5080:1) Teachers may receive 1 Cornell University graduate credit for attending both of the workshops during a semester and either completing a project (parameters to be determined in consultation with the instructor), or writing a 5-7 page (double spaced) paper consisting of reflections on the various workshop presentations, including but not limited to what they've learned and how the ideas apply to their teaching context. For this option, please contact the instructor (Mary Ann Huntley, huntley@math.cornell.edu). Also, submit a registration request by the first day of classes for the semester using the School of Continuing Education’s (SCE) online form (https://sce.cornell.edu/courses/register/credit/visiting-fall). Staff at the SCE will communicate next steps in the enrollment process within 10 business days. A registration fee of $100 is charged for this option. Teachers will receive instructions for payment as part of the communication from SCE.
Important dates for Option 1, Fall 2024:
* August 26, 2024 - Last day to register for MATH 5080
* December 6, 2024 - Last day to submit reflection paper or project
2) Teachers qualify for 5½ CTLE hours per workshop. For this option, there is no cost to attend the workshops. Questions? Contact Toni Gamils (tgamils@teachercentercw.org).
